Rulesets for each sport, and changing one for a single game

What each ruleset sets for every sport, how to change your league's default, and how to use a different one for a single game.

A ruleset tells StatsCastr how a game is played: how many periods, sets or innings, how long each one is, and whether there's overtime. It sets the period labels, the starting clock and when the + period button stops. Your league has a default ruleset, and each game saves its own copy when you create it.

Short version

Set the league default on the League page under Ruleset for future games → Change. To use a different one for one game, pick it in the ruleset box on the + New Game form instead of Use league default.

A few notes:

  • "None" for overtime means the + period button stops at the last regulation period. In field hockey, lacrosse and tennis it greys out there.
  • Volleyball and tennis have no clock. You move to the next set once the current one is complete.
  • Baseball and softball have no clock either; the period is the inning.
  • Football and soccer use one standard format, so there's no ruleset box for them anywhere.

The sport guides cover how each one scores live, for example Keep basketball stats. For the period buttons and clock, see Change the period and set the clock.

Set the league default

You choose the default when you create the league. To change it later:

  1. Tap League in the header.
  2. In the League card, find Ruleset for future games and tap Change.
  3. Pick a ruleset and tap Save. Cancel leaves it as it was.

The note under it says it plainly: Existing games keep their saved ruleset. Only games you create from now on use the new default. If it shows Not set, new games use the standard fallback for the sport (see below).

Use a different ruleset for one game

Say your basketball league plays high school rules, but one game is a college-format showcase.

  1. Tap Games, then + New Game.
  2. Choose the Sport. For sports with rulesets, a ruleset box appears next to it, for example Basketball ruleset.
  3. It starts on Use league default, with a hint underneath: "League default: High School Regular Season. Keep “Use league default” to inherit it, or choose another option to override this game."
  4. Pick the ruleset you want for this game. Each option starts with the ruleset's name.
  5. Fill in the rest of the form and tap Create game.

On a computer, the Preview panel beside the form shows the result under Rules.

If your active league is for a different sport, or the league has no default, the first option reads Use followed by a fallback, for example Use High School fallback. The fallbacks are: High School (basketball), Best of Five (volleyball), Standard (hockey), US High School (field hockey), Men's Field (lacrosse), 9-inning (baseball), 7-inning (softball) and Standard ITF (tennis).

After the game is created

A game's ruleset is locked once it's created. Edit on a scheduled game only changes the date, time and location; the ruleset box is greyed out. To use a different ruleset, delete the game before it starts and create it again. See Delete a game.

Checklist

  • League default matches how most of your games are played
  • One-off games set to their own ruleset on the New game form
  • Ruleset checked before the game starts, since it can't be changed after
  • Game's period labels and clock look right on the Live page
