There's nothing to download or install. StatsCastr is a website: open statscastr.co, sign in, and you're ready. Here's what to bring to the game so stat keeping goes smoothly.
Short version
Any up-to-date browser on a phone, tablet or laptop works. Bring a charged phone, keep the game's Live page open, and if the signal drops, keep logging: new plays are saved on the phone and sent when you're back online.
A device and a browser
StatsCastr works in any modern browser: Safari or Chrome on a phone or tablet, or Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on a laptop.
- A phone is what most stat keepers use. The live scoring screen is built for one hand at the scorer's table: big buttons, team first, then the stat, then the player.
- A tablet or laptop gives you more room for the box score and play log, and is easier for long games or busy sports.
Keep your browser up to date. Updates come with your phone's system updates, or from the app store for Chrome.
Your account
Each stat keeper signs in with their own account. Teams, rosters, leagues and games belong to the account that created them, and they aren't shared with other accounts. If two people keep stats for the same team, decide whose account the team lives in. See Create your StatsCastr account.
Internet at the game
StatsCastr sends each play as you log it, so the box score and the fan page stay current. It's text, not video, so it uses very little data.
- The Live page refreshes the score and stats every 5 seconds.
- Fans' game page refreshes every 15 seconds.
A phone signal or the school's wifi is enough. If the gym is a dead zone, a phone hotspot from someone with better signal works too.
When the signal drops
You can keep logging. New plays are saved on your phone and shown on the scoreboard straight away, and a banner at the top shows how many are waiting, for example Offline — 3 events queued. When the connection comes back, they're sent in the order you logged them, and the banner shows Syncing 3 queued events….
To make sure nothing is lost:
- Keep the game's Live page open until the queued plays have synced. Queued plays are sent from that page.
- Don't reload or close the page while you're offline. StatsCastr can't load again without a connection.
- Edits wait for a connection. Fixing or deleting a play needs the internet, so make corrections once you're back online.
- Don't tap End Game until the banner is gone. Once a game is final, plays still queued on your phone can't be sent.
- If a queued play shows Failed in the play log, tap Retry once you have signal. See Keep scoring when the internet drops if it keeps failing.
Battery and screen
- Start the game fully charged, and bring a battery pack for doubleheaders and tournaments.
- Turn up your phone's auto-lock time, or keep the screen awake while you score, so you don't have to unlock it before every play.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb so calls and notifications don't cover the buttons.
